Who Was Maggie Hathaway?

Maggie Hathaway one of Los Angeles’ most well-known community and civil rights activists. She was a sportswriter, talented singer and actress who appeared in several movies, and she took up golf in 1955. In 1963, Hathaway founded the Minority Associated Golfers to encourage more minorities to take up the sport, and she was a leader in fighting more access to local golf courses for African-Americans. In 1967, she founded the NAACP Image Awards Show to honor African-Americans performance who were often overlooked by mainstream awards shows such as the Oscars and Grammys.
